Another Week of Steady Rig Numbers in Oklahoma

January 19, 2026

Oklahoma’s oil and gas drilling activity remained flat over the past week, according to the latest Baker Hughes Rig Count, with no change reported across the state’s major producing plays.

The Cana Woodford continued to lead the state with 17 active rigs, unchanged from the previous week. The Granite Wash, which extends into the Texas Panhandle, held steady at 16 rigs.

Overall, Oklahoma’s total rig count remained at 43, matching the prior week’s level.

Activity in other plays was also unchanged:

  • Ardmore Woodford: 4 rigs
  • Arkoma Woodford: 2 rigs
  • Mississippian Lime: No reported drilling activity for another consecutive week

National Rig Count Highlights

Across the U.S., several major shale basins showed limited movement:

  • Permian Basin: Held steady at 244 rigs, remaining the nation’s most active shale play
  • Williston Basin (North Dakota): 28 rigs, unchanged
  • Haynesville Shale: Increased by one rig to 42
  • Eagle Ford: Stable at 40 rigs
  • Marcellus Shale: Remained at 24 rigs
  • Utica Shale: Unchanged at 15 rigs
  • Barnett Shale (North Texas): Continued with one active rig

Despite minor fluctuations in select basins, the overall picture points to continued drilling discipline across U.S. shale plays as operators maintain steady activity levels amid commodity price volatility and capital efficiency priorities.
