Baker Hughes, Bechtel, and Woodside Partner on Louisiana LNG Project: A Milestone for Global Energy Supply

The global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) continues to rise as countries seek reliable, cleaner energy solutions. In a significant development for the LNG sector, Baker Hughes has secured a contract from Bechtel Energy to provide state-of-the-art gas technology equipment for Phase 1 of Woodside Energy Group’s Louisiana LNG project. This landmark collaboration marks an important step toward enhancing North America’s role in the global LNG supply chain while addressing the world’s growing energy needs.

The Scope of the Project

Phase 1 of the Louisiana LNG project encompasses two liquefaction plants with a combined capacity of 11 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), contributing to the project’s total permitted capacity of 27.6 MTPA. Baker Hughes will supply critical equipment, including eight main refrigeration compressors powered by LM6000PF+ gas turbines and eight expander-compressors. These advanced technologies are designed to ensure efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in the LNG production process.

Woodside, the project’s developer, has set its sights on achieving Final Investment Decision (FID) readiness by the first quarter of 2025. The project’s development underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing large-scale energy infrastructure.

Proven Expertise Driving Success

Baker Hughes brings over 40 years of experience in LNG technology to the table, coupled with a strong history of collaboration with both Bechtel and Woodside. This extensive expertise has been pivotal in securing the contract and ensuring the project’s success. Beyond this contract, Baker Hughes has also been selected to supply electric-powered Integrated Compressor Line (ICL) packages and other turbomachinery equipment for the associated pipeline, further solidifying its role as a technology leader in the energy sector.

“We are committed to providing our proven technology to ensure the LNG industry stands ready to meet rapidly growing energy demand,” said Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes. “Building on our established collaboration with Bechtel and Woodside, we look forward to supporting this important project and contributing to sustainable energy development.”

Meeting the Growing LNG Demand

As the world transitions toward a cleaner energy mix, LNG plays a vital role as a bridge fuel, offering a lower-carbon alternative to coal and oil. The Louisiana LNG project is poised to enhance global LNG supply, positioning North America as a key player in the energy export market. According to Paul Marsden, President of Bechtel Energy, “Louisiana LNG will play a vital role in meeting the world’s increasing LNG demand. Bechtel is proud to collaborate with Baker Hughes to help deliver this critical project.”

Strategic and Economic Impacts

The Louisiana LNG project is not just a win for the companies involved but also a significant boost for the local economy. It is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen infrastructure in Louisiana. Additionally, the project’s emphasis on modern, efficient technology highlights the industry’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

Looking Ahead

With FID readiness targeted for early 2025, the Louisiana LNG project represents a major milestone in the global energy landscape. Baker Hughes, Bechtel, and Woodside’s partnership underscores the importance of innovation and collaboration in meeting the challenges of today’s energy markets. As the world’s appetite for LNG continues to grow, projects like these will play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and secure energy future.
