The top 10 Counties in the Mid Continent by wells drilled in 2021 are Lea NM (727 wells spud), Midland TX (667 wells spud), Martin TX (508 wells spud), Howard TX (472 wells spud), Eddy NM (449 wells spud), Reeves TX (404 wells spud), Loving TX (310 wells spud), Upton TX (286 wells spud), Karnes TX (253 wells spud), and Glasscock TX (177 wells spud).
All the counties are located in the Permian Basin, it spans western Texas and eastern New Mexico, represents the most prolific hydrocarbon production region in the United States. They accounted for about 30% of U.S. crude oil production and 14% of U.S. natural gas production (measured as gross withdrawals) in 2020. Technology innovations, such as longer lateral wells and multi-well pad drilling, has helped reduce costs and increase productivity in developing oil and natural gas resources in the Permian Basin.
