Fire Update

Bald Mountain (South of Grovedale) – Wildfire: GWF-019

The Bald Mountain fire (Forestry # GWF-019) is located approximately 36 km south of the Hamlet of Grovedale. Since its inception, this fire has grown to 10,000 ha in size. The fire’s leading edge is located at the north end and is getting close to the Two Lakes Road. Fortunately, the growth of the fire has been very stagnant over the last day, with the leading-edge smouldering more so than burning hot. At this time, Forestry and the MD of Greenview are monitoring the fire and the potential for further movement. At this time, Grovedale residents remain under Evacuation Notice. However, no further plans for formal evacuation are being planned at this time.

Sturgeon Lake – Wildfire: GWF-017

The Sturgeon Lake fire (Forestry #GWF-017) located within and around the immediate area of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has been an aggressive fire that has grown to 3,765 ha in size. With the assistance of the lake itself, fire progression was slowed as it pushed in a northerly fashion and resulted in impacts on the Sandy Bay area communities. Where the lake was less prevalent, the fire spread southwesterly and had significant impacts on other areas of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation community and provincial Highway 43, which runs through the area. Forestry, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Greenview Fire-Rescue Service and the Valleyview Fire Department continue to fight this fire and progress is being made. The western side of the lake has not been impacted at this time, and with cooperative weather, firefighters are hoping for further progress in getting it under control. An Evacuation order remains in place for residents of this area.

Little Puskwaskau (Northwest of Valleyview) – Wildfire: GWF-023

The Little Paswaskau Fire occurred northwest of Valleyview. Like the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation fire, considerable aggressive efforts have been made to suppress its aggressive nature. With the significant personnel and equipment that has been dedicated to this fire, much progress has been made and, at this time, not considered a threat to the public. An Evacuation Order for this area is still in place, although parts of the evacuation zone were reduced at 6:00 pm, allowing for some residents to return to their homes due to the progression made.

Fox Creek and Little Smoky – Wildfire: WWF-023

The Fox Creek Fire is a long fire 21,568 ha in size that has had the potential to impact both the Town of Fox Creek, Hamlet of Little Smoky and surrounding residents and infrastructure. Forestry and the Fox Creek Fire Department have taken an aggressive approach to this fire and are constructing fire guards with heavy equipment on multiple fronts. The Town of Fox Creek and Hamlet (and the area) of Little Smoky have been evacuated. In conjunction with cooperative weather, progress has been made on this fire and continues to be monitored concerning the threat to area homes and businesses. When conditions permit, the evacuation notices will be revisited in hopes of revisions.
