The Permian Basin—America’s most prolific oil and gas region—is about to gain two new sources of power. Vistra has announced plans to invest $950 million in building two natural gas-fired power plants, adding a combined 860 megawatts of dispatchable electricity to the Texas grid by 2028. That’s enough to power nearly 215,000 homes.

Governor Greg Abbott praised the move, calling it a boost for both reliability and job creation. For Texas, where surging demand from oil and gas operations and fast-growing communities has stressed the grid, the projects are a timely addition.
Natural gas remains central to the state’s energy mix, even as renewables expand. By balancing wind and solar with gas-fired reliability, Vistra’s investment strengthens grid stability and helps ensure Texas avoids the kinds of disruptions seen in recent years during peak demand and extreme weather.
The projects underscore how the Permian Basin’s growth is driving energy infrastructure investment, extending beyond hydrocarbons to include the electricity needed to fuel the region’s future.
