Enbridge is forming a new joint venture with KKR, in collaboration with Apollo Global Management, to fund two major expansions of its Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia. KKR and Apollo will invest approximately C$2.7 billion, including about C$700 million paid to Enbridge at closing, in exchange for a combined 29% interest in the Westcoast system once the Sunrise expansion enters service. Enbridge will retain majority ownership, operational control and responsibility for executing both projects.
The investment supports the Aspen Point and Sunrise expansion programs, which are designed to move more natural gas from growing northeast British Columbia supply areas into downstream markets. Aspen Point expands the northern T-North portion of Westcoast and is expected to enter service in 2026, while Sunrise expands the T-South corridor through central and southern British Columbia toward the Lower Mainland and the Huntingdon-Sumas connection with the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Sunrise is scheduled for completion in late 2028.
Westcoast currently spans roughly 2,900 kilometres and can transport approximately 3.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas. Following completion of Sunrise, system capacity is expected to increase to approximately 3.9 Bcf/d. The projects strengthen takeaway capacity for British Columbia production, including Montney gas, while improving access to Canadian demand, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-related markets and customers in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
For contractors and suppliers, Sunrise is particularly important because of its multi-year construction scope. Opportunities can extend across large-diameter pipeline construction, compression, welding, coating, valves, metering, electrical systems, inspection, environmental services, logistics and reclamation. Aspen Point represents a nearer-term opportunity, while Sunrise provides a longer sales runway through 2028.
Industry Impact
The transaction reinforces the continued buildout of North American natural gas infrastructure as producers seek reliable routes from low-cost Western Canadian supply to domestic, LNG and U.S. markets. At the same time, the broader geopolitical focus on the U.S. as a “safe barrel” of oil and gas supports investment across integrated North American energy infrastructure: secure Canadian gas feeding U.S. markets and export corridors complements dependable U.S. oil and gas production and reduces reliance on higher-risk global supply chains.
OFS Sales Strategy
Oilfield service companies should map the Aspen Point and Sunrise construction corridors and identify Enbridge contractors, engineering firms and procurement partners involved in each project phase. Prioritize opportunities tied to pipeline construction, compression, inspection, environmental work, transportation, welding, coatings, valves and field services, with separate sales campaigns for the near-term Aspen Point completion and the multi-year Sunrise build through 2028.
Two-Sentence Summary
Enbridge, KKR and Apollo are backing approximately C$2.7 billion of investment into the Aspen Point and Sunrise expansions of the Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia. The projects will increase takeaway capacity for Western Canadian gas, strengthen connections into the U.S. Pacific Northwest and create a multi-year pipeline and infrastructure opportunity for oilfield service companies and suppliers.
