Ensign Energy Services has agreed to acquire privately held Citadel Drilling for $65 million, strengthening its position in the U.S. Permian Basin with the addition of six high-specification AC drilling rigs. The transaction is expected to close following customary closing conditions and will be financed using cash on hand and existing credit facilities.

The acquisition adds more than drilling assets. Ensign will also bring on Citadel’s experienced management team, field personnel, and managed pressure drilling (MPD) capabilities through Opla Energy Services, a business that provides MPD equipment and engineering support for complex drilling operations. These capabilities are increasingly important as operators continue drilling longer laterals and more technically challenging wells across the Permian.
For Ensign, the transaction expands its U.S. drilling footprint in North America’s most active oil-producing basin while enhancing its ability to deliver advanced drilling technologies and specialized services. Combining Citadel’s fleet with Ensign’s existing operations is expected to improve operational scale and strengthen customer offerings in one of the industry’s most competitive markets.
Industry Impact
The acquisition reflects continued investment in high-performance drilling assets despite a more disciplined North American drilling environment. For operators, service companies, and suppliers, the deal underscores ongoing demand for modern AC rigs and managed pressure drilling expertise as efficiency and well complexity remain key drivers in the Permian Basin.
