Report Overview

πŸ“Š Marcellus Operator Activity: Drilling Remains Highly Concentrated

The Marcellus operator market is highly concentrated, with 10 Steady State operators accounting for 21 of 25 active rigs (84%) and 276 of 341 wells drilled in 2026 (81%).

The operator landscape breaks down as follows:

β€’ 10 Steady State Operators β€” 23.8%
β€’ 16 Next Tier Operators β€” 38.1%
β€’ 16 Dormant / Legacy Operators β€” 38.1%

While Steady State companies represent less than one-quarter of operators, they dominate current development activity and represent the most immediate sales opportunity for companies supporting drilling, completions, facilities, infrastructure, and field technology.

πŸ”Ή Drilling Activity Leaders

EQT (EQT) leads the market with 6 active rigs and 91 wells drilled in 2026, followed by:

β€’ Expand Energy (EXE): 3 rigs | 48 wells
β€’ Range Resources (RRC): 3 rigs | 24 wells

Together, these three operators account for 12 of the 21 rigs operated by the Steady State group.

πŸ”Ή Current Drilling Momentum

Steady State operators also account for 57 of 71 permits issued in the last 60 days (80.3%).

The Next Tier segment remains an important secondary market, with 65 wells drilled in 2026, creating opportunities for regional prospecting, new-product introductions, and market-share expansion.

πŸ”Ή Permit Inventory Creates a Watch List

Permit activity also points to potential future opportunities.

Steady State operators hold 241 permits from the last 12 months, while Dormant / Legacy operators hold 192 permits.

However, 175 of those Dormant / Legacy permits are concentrated in Tribune and Diversified Energy.

That makes the Dormant / Legacy segment more of a selective reactivation watch list than a broad drilling-services target. Recent permits may signal future drilling programs, asset transitions, or development activity that has not yet converted into 2026 drilling.

🎯 Sales & Business Development Takeaway

Tier 1 β€” Steady State: Prioritize for recurring drilling, completions, infrastructure, facilities, and technology opportunities.

Tier 2 β€” Next Tier: Target for growth-account development, regional campaigns, new-product introductions, and competitive share gains.

Tier 3 β€” Dormant / Legacy: Focus on production optimization, maintenance, integrity, environmental services, automation, and facility upgrades β€” while monitoring permit activity for signs of renewed drilling.

Bottom line: Marcellus activity remains concentrated among a relatively small group of operators, making account prioritization critical for oilfield service companies looking to focus sales resources where near-term activity and future development potential are strongest.
