Canada Approves Enbridge’s $4B Sunrise Pipeline Expansion

The Canadian government has approved Enbridge’s $4 billion Sunrise Expansion of its Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia, marking a key step in supporting the region’s growing energy demand.

The project will add approximately 300 MMcf/d of natural gas capacity to the southern portion of the system. Key components include ~139 km of new pipeline, additional compression, and upgrades to existing infrastructure.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with an expected in-service date in late 2028.

The expansion is strategically aligned with the ramp-up of LNG export capacity in British Columbia, particularly projects like Woodfibre LNG, helping ensure sufficient gas supply as exports increase.

Why it matters:
This project reinforces the role of natural gas infrastructure in supporting LNG growth on Canada’s west coast, while creating opportunities for contractors and service companies involved in pipeline construction, compression, and facility upgrades.
