Haynesville Drilling Snapshot: Q1 2025 vs Q1 2024

The first quarter of 2025 saw a slight dip in drilling activity across the Haynesville region compared to the same period in 2024. According to our latest review of new well permit and activity data:

  • Wells Drilled: Q1 2025 recorded 109 wells, down from 122 wells in Q1 2024 — a decrease of approximately 10.7%.
  • Operator Activity: While overall activity declined, some operators increased their drilling pace.
    • Expand Energy remained a top player, with 24 wells in Q1 2025 (down slightly from 26 in Q1 2024).
    • TG Natural Resources, BPX, and Sabine Oil & Gas all increased activity year-over-year.
    • Aethon Energy, on the other hand, saw a reduction from 21 wells in Q1 2024 to 15 in Q1 2025.
  • Rig Contractor Trends:
    • The number of unique contractor and rig combinations fell from 49 in Q1 2024 to 39 in Q1 2025, indicating a trend toward consolidation of rig services or more efficient rig utilization.

This subtle shift highlights a maturing basin where efficiency and operator selectivity are becoming more prominent. As natural gas prices remain volatile and operators focus on capital discipline, expect drilling strategies to continue evolving across East Texas and North Louisiana.
