The latest rig count from Baker Hughes Co. showed the national total gained four rigs to reach 585 while Oklahoma was unchanged with a total of 34 active oil and gas rigs. However, the numbers still reflect the fact that more oil and gas rigs are in storage compared to a year ago.
Baker Hughes indicated Oklahoma’s total of 34, a number that had been in slow decline for the past several weeks, compared to 40 rigs reported one year earlier.
Nationally, the number of oil rigs over the past week was unchanged at 479 while there was an increase of four gas rigs to reach a total of 101. The U.S. count of 585 compared to a year ago when the total was 680, reflecting a decline of 95 rigs over the past 12 month.
The decline in the past year include a loss of 61 oil rigs and 34 gas rigs. The U.S. Offshore Rig Count is up 2 to 23, up 4 year-over-year.
Oklahoma compared to Texas where there was a gain of one to reach 278 rigs, far below the 337 reported a year earlier. New Mexico added one rig to reach 107, down slightly from the 111 rigs it had a year ago.
North Dakota was unchanged in the past week with 34 active rigs, the same number it reported 12 months earlier.
In the past week, Louisiana gained 3 rigs to reach 43. The Red Top Rig Report showed Kansas added one rig for a total of 29 while Colorado was unchanged at 14 and Ohio remained at 10 rigs.
Pennsylvania stayed at 21 rigs. Utah continued with 12 and no changes were reflected in West Virginia with 5 rigs and Wyoming with 11.
The oil and gas plays reflect the same story—very few gains. Of the 13 different oil and gas regions reported by Baker Hughes, only one saw a gain of drilling activity over the past week. That was the Eagle Ford where the count increased by two to 49 total rigs.
The Permian Basin was unchanged at 305 and the Williston remained at 35. Another active play, the Marcellus remained at 25 and the Haynesville continued with 36 rigs.
The Ardmore Woodford stayed at 4 rigs and the Arkoma Woodford remained at one. The Cana Woodford saw no change with a count of 17. The D-J Basin continued with 10 rigs and the Granite Wash was unchanged at 3 rigs. There was also no change in the Mississippian where only one rig is active. The Utica play stayed at 10 rigs.
