ExxonMobil Hits 1,000 Wells in the Delaware Basin

ExxonMobil has reached a major milestone: 1,000 horizontal wells drilled in the New Mexico portion of the Delaware Basin — just seven years after the first spud in 2017.

“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team to safely and responsibly deliver 1,000 wells in the Delaware Basin,” said Scott Buechler, Delaware Basin Production Manager.

Several key factors helped ExxonMobil reach this milestone:

  • Contiguous Acreage Expansion: Strengthened by the acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources, enabling longer laterals and fewer surface impacts.
  • Longer Laterals: Successful four-mile laterals at Poker Lake, reducing surface land disturbance and operational footprint.
  • Lower Emissions: Implementation of low-emission central vessel batteries and the first fully electrified compressor stations in the Delaware Basin, supporting ExxonMobil’s goal to reach net-zero emissions for operated assets by 2030.
  • Cube Development: Simultaneous multi-zone drilling across Bone Spring and Wolfcamp intervals, optimizing recovery.

Looking ahead, ExxonMobil plans to expand development to additional benches outside the Bone Spring and Wolfcamp, continuing its focus on efficient resource recovery and sustainability.
