Salt Water Disposal Wells (SWD)

A salt water disposal (SWD) well is a disposal site for water produced as a result of the oil and gas extraction process. As water emerges from a wellhead, it must be gathered and transported through a network of pipelines or on trucks to a Salt Water Disposal Well (SWD). Alternatively, some water remains in the production lifecycle and goes through treatment before it is reused in subsequent hydraulic fracturing operations.

Regulation of SWD facilities is significant and thorough. The 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act required the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) to set minimum requirements for salt water injection wells, along with many other wells utilized in disposing of various hazardous and nonhazardous wastes. Rules for the construction of all oil and gas related wells, including injection or disposal wells, are intended to protect groundwater and require multiple layers of cement and steel to ensure that usable quality water is protected.

Treatment and Disposal of Wastewater Service Providers

A result of increase production of salt water and the requirement for disposal if has created service providers for the treatment and disposal of wastewater generated from crude oil and natural gas production and for the disposal of solids such as tank bottoms and drilling fluids and performs truck and frac tank washouts. In addition, the Water Solutions segment can sell the recovered hydrocarbons that result from performing these services.
