Apache must pay $4 million in penalties or air quality violations

Energy company Apache Corp. must implement a third-party verification system to ensure that it’s complying with a court-approved consent decree for air quality violations at its well pads in Texas and New Mexico.

The hydrocarbon exploration company’s settlement resolved allegations that it violated federal and state requirements to control air pollution, including methane emissions, at 23 Permian Basin oil and gas sites in Texas and New Mexico,according its settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency and New Mexico Environment Department.

Apache must pay $4 million in penalties and $5.5 million in mitigation projects.
